
Introduction
The aim of the project was to make use of a large area of playing field that was out of bounds to the pupils. In its initial state it was a flat grassland area with a line of mature trees at the rear of the plot. The project was started in November 1999 with the planting of trees to form a triangle within the middle of the plot. The next step was to plan and design the rest of the area.
With the help of Shropshire Wildlife Trust, the children in class 4 designed various plans. These were discussed in relation to sun direction, shade, wind and rain and how these would affect the various habitat locations. The final plan is as shown in this link. The need to involve the children from the outset was essential to give them a sense of ownership of the project.
As can be seen from the plan the various habitats decided upon were a wild flower meadow, a bog garden, a butterfly garden, a wild flower bed and a mini woodland. To provide added shelter for the butterfly garden, a hedge was planted and this in itself created a new habitat. It was also felt that the area needed defining by installing a definite boundary as soon as all essential heavy excavation work had been completed. After much research, it was decided that the quickest way to create a natural boundary was to plant a willow screen.
The eventual aim of the project is to provide an area that acts as an extension to the classroom. Its value is as a learning aid, especially in relation to science projects. It also provides an excellent opportunity for the children to explore their environment. Pupils in year 5 and 6 were involved in most aspects of creating the site with those from years 3 and 4 helping where they could. Projects such as hedge and tree planting, meadow establishment and path building were carried out enthusiastically and to a high standard. The number of new wellies that had to be bought reflects the lack of similar opportunities normally offered to the children! The amount of enjoyment the children had shows the importance of the outside classroom.
With most of the site building blocks established, the main aim now is to utilize the learning potential of the site.
